Hi! My boyfriend and I have finally decided we are ready to make the move.
We are from Richmond Virginia and we are really bored with the lack of diversity, not to mention the freezing winters up here. I am originally from New Jersey, and Richmond is one of the most closed minded cities in the whole country.
I was curious if anyone had any info to share about the cost of living down there. I work in customer service here and make about $27k and my boyfriend is a printer tech and he makes about $34k. We pay about $700/mo. for rent and I pay around $130/mo for renters and full coverage on a 2001 honda.
I have done some research and some cost calculators say Miami is cheaper than Richmond and others say it is more expensive. We would definately have to live in one of the suburbs- maybe Hialeah?
If anyone would be willing to share with me the cost of electric, water, full coverage cost of car/renters insurance, rent, or anything else I would greatly appreciate it. I have also starting taking bellydance classes in Richmond and am looking for a good instructor in the Miami area.

Re: Relocating to Miami in May...
Sat, April 8, 2006 - 9:10 PMHello..
Well As far as your questions about the cost of living, I think it depends where you live, what your budget is, what you make, etc...
I wouldn't recommend Hialeah... it's hectic but is cheap and far away from everything, there is a mostly a Hispanic population there and they mostly speak Spanish... I would recommend you stay in Broward county and commute if you have to...
Electric bills: well it depends where you live, how old is the house, what type of AC you have... etc... summers are hot! so for example, when I lived in Miami, I would pay about $60 a month but we didn't have central AC. Now I live in Broward and pay around $175 with central AC.
For car insurance: you should try to get a quote in GEICO.com as if you were here... but there is something very cheap offered by a company called ESTRELLA which covers you only in FL, if you travel outside and have an accident, you're not covered.
Rent: depends where you live, how big the space... a studio runs about $1,000 and up dending the city...
Bellydance: the best school I know is the Goddess Store in Hollywood;.. is a nice little place with very nice women and they have all sorts of belly dance classes and other dance courses as well... Every second Saturday they have a show... you can check the website thegoddessstore.com. I recommend Maja or Jery... to me they are the best at the Goddess Store...
Well hope this helps a little... ;)
